Perhaps you thought that the next Samsung phone to include Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box would be the Galaxy S3. After all, this is a device that had been talked about for months before its May 3 announcement in London, and it would have been a criminal oversight if such a device did not ship with Android’s latest OS.
With a week before the Galaxy S3’s launch, it looks like its predecessor may be the second Samsung phone with ICS pre-loaded after last year’s Galaxy Nexus.
We have received feedback that recent shipments of the Samsung Galaxy S2 have actually been shipping with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich instead of Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Yes, that does indeed sound incredible, and as this is just a rumor from an unnamed source, we should be taking this one with a grain of salt.
What we do know for sure is that a firmware update for the Samsung Galaxy S2 is available, and can be installed by going to Settings, About Phone then Software Update on your Galaxy S2.
It does sound like a fascinating possibility – what if the Galaxy S2 shipped with ICS and not Gingerbread?
But given that the handset was released about a year ago and announced a good 15 months ago, it seems highly unlikely Samsung would turn on a dime and ship newer Galaxy S2 versions with ICS.
This is especially true with the Galaxy S3 on its way very soon. As we remain skeptical about this shipping-with-ICS Galaxy S2 rumor, we’ll keep you posted if and when this rumor continues to build up steam.
