Microsoft Surface RT Priced at $499 Sells Out on Pre-Order

Microsoft’s upcoming 32 GB Surface RT tablet without Touch Cover, which carries a price point of $499, had sold out as of Wednesday. This was confirmed on the company’s pre-order website for the highly-anticipated tablets.

Pre-orders for the Surface RT started Wednesday as well, so it looks like Microsoft could have a hot-selling device on its hands.

There are three versions of the Surface RT to choose from – the $499 version has 32 GB internal storage and no Touch Cover, the $599 has the same amount of onboard memory, but with the Touch Cover included, and the top-of-the-line $699 Surface RT with 64 GB storage and Touch Cover.

The Touch Cover is a unique feature of the Surface tablets that would serve as a combination tablet cover and keyboard; it is also available a la carte for $119.99. Another cover/keyboard combo, the Type Cover, costs $129.99 separately and is a bit thicker than the former cover.

As it stands, the $599 and $699 variants are still in stock and should ship on October 26, which is the Surface RT and Windows 8’s official launch date. The $499 variant, however, may take at least three weeks to ship.

Interestingly enough, the Type Cover is not sold out as of the moment; the $499 Surface RT doesn’t include a keyboard. This variant was colorfully described by an NPD Group analyst as “an opening price point gambit” and “just another tablet” without a Touch or Type Cover present. Another Surface tablet, the Windows 8-running Surface Pro, will be released by January next year.
